Whether a single board, a nonprofit charter, or a public utility-style oversight is the right answer is less important than acknowledging what’s at stake: the public needs durable levers—transparency, red-teaming mandates, standardized risk reporting, and recourse—when these systems fail.

A practical governance agenda for AI-as-infrastructure should include:

  • Compute transparency: register large training runs above a public threshold, disclose energy use and data provenance, and publish model cards with known failure modes.
  • Safety interface standards: require that AI systems controlling physical processes expose auditable “kill switches,” testable constraint layers, and incident logs.

Biodiversity isn’t a side quest: siting renewables in a living world

Resilient energy systems depend on resilient ecosystems. The global 30×30 goal—to protect 30% of land and sea by 2030—is lagging, but Colombia offers a playbook: align national conservation targets with concrete designations, fund management, and pair protection with community livelihoods. The math is stark. To reach 30×30, the world must roughly double land protections and more than triple ocean protections from early-2020s baselines.

For developers, this is not just about permits—it’s about operating risk. Projects that bulldoze through biodiversity hotspots face lawsuits, delays, and social opposition that are far costlier than early avoidance. AI can help here too, but only if the data are open and trusted: species distribution models, high-resolution habitat maps, indigenous land boundaries, and dynamic migration layers can steer projects away from high-conflict corridors. When Colombia expands protected areas in the Amazon and along its Pacific and Caribbean coasts, it clarifies red lines and de-risks investment in lower-conflict zones. The integration challenge is practical:

The ideas that make the leap—transferable safety in robotics, world models tied to dispatch and maintenance, open data that lowers siting conflict—share a common trait: they are embedded in institutions that value verification over vibes.

We don’t need to slow down. We need to grow up. Pair the breakthroughs with guardrails, fund the connective tissue, and treat biodiversity as infrastructure. Then AI stops being a story about gadgets and starts being a story about reliability. That’s how hype becomes heat, and sizzle becomes supply.
